If you’re walking around in your neighborhood, you might spot one of these little structures popping up more and more. Inspired by the idea of “take a book, leave a book,” a Little Free Library is a book-sharing box that is open 24/7, completely free and accessible to all! They function purely on the honor system where anyone can take a book or share one. If you can, it is encouraged to try to leave a book in the same library if you take one or two, or in another in your area!
The first Little Free Library was built in 2009, and by 2010 the trend had spread with a clear purpose: to share good books and bring communities together. Little Free Libraries support a love of reading, improvements in literacy, and free access to books in areas where they would otherwise be scarce.
