Fine Tastings honorary 2024 event chair Linda Garvey has been helping to grow the event since its inception 20 years ago. At that time, the evening was a way for Al Sigl volunteers to invite a friend to learn more about the nonprofit while sampling a handful of different wines at a gathering hosted by the EJ DelMonte Corporation at the DelMonte Lodge. Around 25 guests attended.
Today, Fine Tastings for Al Sigl is a major fundraiser for the nonprofit, with hundreds of guests enjoying signature dishes, fine wines, spirits and more from nearly two dozen tasting partners, including:
Over the years, the event has raised over $800,000. Event proceeds were distributed as grants to cover specific Member Agency program needs or equipment purchases. Since 2020, the grants to Member Agencies have been unrestricted, able to be used where they will have the greatest impact, often helping to meet critical needs not covered by other sources.
“Looking back at what we have accomplished together, I am most proud of how the funds raised have made a difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs in our community,” says Linda.
“These grants have been used in so many different ways over the years – from big purchases like audiology equipment able to conduct a hearing test for a newborn infant, to funding recreational activities and special outings that some might take for granted, like a recent trip to the State Fair, and the memories made.”
“I’ve made lifelong friends volunteering at Al Sigl,” Linda shares, “Once people learn more about Al Sigl’s mission, they want to get involved,” she continues. “I often hear from local businesses how a friend or family member was helped by an Al Sigl Member Agency and how they are happy to take part in the event. It’s also rewarding to see how our tasting partners and guests look forward to coming back year after year.
For 2024 co-chair Terry Steele, volunteering is a family affair. Her father, Frank, is a long-time Al Sigl volunteer. As a child, Frank received his first wheelchair from journalist and radio broadcaster Al Sigl, the organization’s namesake. “There are so many reasons why I support Al Sigl Community,” Terry says. “One of the reasons I love and admire my dad so much is his perseverance, which I attribute in part to the services he received so many years ago. My dad's condition never stopped him.” She adds, “I am grateful my dad and I are able to share this journey together.”
